The pope resigns

Pope Benedict has announced that he will be stepping down as pope at the end of the month.

n the announcement read to cardinals in Latin, the German-born pope, 85, said: “Well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of St Peter …

“As from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours (2 p.m. ET) the See of Rome, the See of St. Peter will be vacant and a conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.”

Let’s look at his misdeeds for a moment. This is the guy who orchestrated a decades long conspiracy to obstruct justice and shelter child molesters. He has maintained and reinforced teachings that have promoted the expansion of poverty and the spread of HIV. He has vehemently opposed the rights of anyone who is not a straight male. Yeah, he’s a pretty shitty mother fucker.

It would be fitting if he spent the rest of his life in prison and in a way he will:

Lombardi said Benedict would first go to the papal summer residence south of Rome and then move into a cloistered convent inside the Vatican walls. It was not clear if Benedict would have a public life… He had wanted to retire to his native Germany to pursue his theological writings, something which he will now do from a convent inside the Vatican.

It’ll be interesting to see who replaces him and how much of a force for evil the Catholic church will be under a new leader. Let’s just say, I’m not optimistic.

  1. Unfortunately, you have good reasons not to be optimistic about his potential replacement. Cardinal Marc Ouellet, formerly the archbishop of Quebec City, has the best odds of replacing Pope Benedict XVI, but he is an extremely conservative man who will deinitely not want the Catholic church to change.

    1. It’s a trend that’s being observed in a number of denominations. Not only are the leaders in the west panicking over the progressive trends in society (i.e. women’s and LGBT rights), but Christianity is far more successful in the developing world and the power is shifting.

  2. Dustin, first allow me to applaud your use of the term ‘shitty mother fucker’ when referring to the ex Pope. So apt and so fun to say aloud! As an atheist who will probably forever suffer the scars of being brainwashed in Catholicism, I agree with your summation of and opinions on the ex pope. Sadly, I have to concur with your opinion that things are not going to get any better in the Catholic Church. One positive, perhaps, is that ex Catholics tend to be so vehemently anti religion. And you can’t have ex Catholics without Catholics 🙂
