A Worthy Cause
I know quite a few people in my atheist and skeptic groups that I helped form do not understand my dislike of religion. They think I am over the top at times. I blog, I podcast – I speak out. I understand where some of them are coming from. They try to live in a post-atheist world where religion is not as issue. Being in the belly of the beast so to speak, I know religions and – by extension their followers – do not always have what is best for people in mind. That is most of the reason I speak out most of the time. (Other times, I do relish the thought of religious people squirming.)
In the UK, I could be arrested for saying most of what I write about on here under their blasphemy law, the “Public Order Act”. Many people have seen court and jail because of this law. Thankfully, Rowan Atkins has joined a few groups that usually make very odd bedfellows during any other circumstance to take on this law. Rowan, better known as The Black Adder or Mr. Bean to most, will make a wonderful spokesman. In a statement he made recently, Rowan called the Public Order Act the “new intolerance” saying further it has a “chilling effect on free expression and free protest”. He went on to say,
The clear problem of the outlawing of insult is that too many things can be interpreted as such. Criticism, ridicule, sarcasm, merely stating an alternative point of view to the orthodoxy, can be interpreted as insult.
While I do not trust the motivations of all the groups that are a part of this coalition to remove or alter blasphemy laws in the UK, I appreciate them doing this none the less. I would also like to have people in America think about the blasphemy laws that people are trying to implement here. Sure, it might have *some* effect on the Westboro Church, but it would also harm any person with valid claims. Want to protest the oppression of women and the abuse of children in the Catholic church? Don’t even think it if those bills pass.
Dinesh D’Souza Resigns
Dinesh D’Souza, one of the most vocal Christian apologetics speakers just resigned from his two year post as President of Kings college. This is due to the article in The World a few days ago.
You would be right to ask why this obvious man of god was just kicked to the curb after such good works as the just released propaganda film 2016: Obama’s America. The short answer is: He is currently married to Dixie – his wife of 20 years. While he applied for divorce in California on October 4th, CA law states there is a minimum 6 month waiting period for a divorce to be finalized. Why then was he sharing a room with a woman that he was introducing as his fiancee in September at a Christian conference? Dum-dah-dum-dummmmmm!
What gets my goat is, after all this came out, Denesh had an interview with Christianity Today saying “he did not know that Christians generally do not approve of engagements prior to divorces being finalized“. How could such a strong and righteous Christian that is such a vocal proponent of proper christian marriage and vocal opponent of gay marriage equality, not know such a fundamental tidbit?
To add a bit of juicy news, it now seems that Dinesh’s mistress, Denise Odie Joseph II, might still married to another man as well. I will be looking for more info on this as it develops.
