The US House of Representatives defeated a spending bill on Wednesday due to the (I hate to say it) more centrist Republican leadership refused to make an additional $24 billion in cuts and refusing to increase FEMA funding by 1.5 billion without cutting it elsewhere. They chose to cut it from a hybrid vehicle loan program which prompted house Democrats to vote against it. By not making more cuts the Tea Party contingent also voted against it.
Today the House has finally passed a similar bill that will allow the government to operate into the new Fiscal Year, but the senate is expected to reject it.
Were talking about a bill here that covers more than $1 trillion in spending and people are arguing over a few billion? The disagreement with the Democrats was over less than 0.15% and the Tea Party disagreement was over less than 2.4%. Fortunately it appears the Tea Party was just going for a publicity stunt, but this is getting really old. It’s clear that these politicians have forgotten how to compromise. I know he’s trying, but Mr. Boehner seriously needs to get his House in order.
The S&P briefly cut the US credit rating citing Congress’s pettiness and in the most recent public opinion polls the US congress has a record low approval rating of about 13.5%. I hope I’m not the only one here who thinks we need to fire the whole lot of them.
