Lopsided Reporting
Dylan Lovan from the Associated Press scored an interview with Bill Nye – The Science Guy. What a chance to tell a story that many people would want to read. But, in my opinion, it was a chance for Dylan to put forward more creationist propaganda. As you might recall, Bill put out a video on Big Think recently decrying parents for teaching Christian creationism to their children.
I would say this interview was completely lopsided. Skewed because Dylan gave an equal voice to Ken Ham, the co-founder of Answers in Genesis. When it comes to the scientific communities having a consensus, giving more than a single word to Ken Ham – a person with barely any science knowledge in the fields he derides – creates a lopsided interview. It also gives credence to Ken Ham’s argument because, why would a “reputable” journalist bring a liar or ignorant person into the article?
When it comes to the intellectual honesty of any topic, it would be great to see the proper ratio of competing ideas from the field being discussed. Take evolution via natural selection. You would see very high 90ies for that theory and one or two dissenting thoughts up on the stage of ideas.
I’m talking some shit about this because once you notice that equal time is given to people who do not deserve it, you start to notice it every where in our media. And, it’s something that deserves to be challenged.
