Savage Speaker
A couple weeks ago, Dan Savage was the keynote speaker at the Journalism Education Association/ National Scholastic Press Association (JEA/NSPA) Convention, in Seattle, Washington. He gave a talk to thousands of teenagers – mostly about the anti bullying “It Gets Better” campaign and his growing up in a Catholic home and school.
I’m sure a few of you have read or listened to to Dan’s “Savage Love” articles and show. He has never hidden his feelings about religion and the bible. Mix in the “It Gets Better” campaign and you know that religion will be talked about – and, not in a warm / fuzzy feeling way. Dan took it easy on the book. Telling the young adults to ignore the bullshit in the bible… We’ve ignored the order to not eat shellfish… not to mention getting rid of slavery. Why not rid ourselves of some hate against the LGBT community? This angered a small group of students that walked out in the middle of Dan’s talk. Dan later apologized even though I don’t see the need to do so.
It sure feels like people have been claiming oppressed majority a lot lately. That’s a good thing. Getting them to cry “uncle” is exactly what I want. the louder they cry out, the more people will notice what bigots they are being. The more they cry, the more that decent people will come to realize the BS that is being spouted. As those decent people wake from their slumber, they will notice other groups getting trampled on and call for a stop to the oppression that religious people use to hurt others.
Oddest Quote goes To…
Keira Knightley.
If only I wasn’t an atheist, I could get away with anything. You’d just ask for forgiveness and then you’d be forgiven. It sounds much better than having to live with guilt.
You might think Keira is about to run down her nearest church and get saved… until read the full context of her interview with David Cronenberg. It seems Keira and David were having a bit of fun at the expense of Newt Gingrich and his infidelities. It’s so easy for a religious person to sin and supposedly just say a few words to be forgiven.
David and Keira go on to talk about Newt leading the charge against Bill Clinton for having sex with Monica. Isn’t it a great feeling to watch stars openly mock our religious politicians? =)
Penny Arcade Classic
If you consider yourself a geek, but are not familiar with Penny Arcade, you do not deserve the title of Geek. Here is a classic comic from their archive.
Strange Days
When it rains, it pours. I am having personal issues. Breaking up with my girlfriend after many years together is hard. Letting her stay here til she finds a place is damn near impossible. Ugh. BTW, go watch Strange Days with Ralph Fiennes. It’s not Matrix 1 good, but it ain’t bad.
