I had a rant I’ve been working on for a few days that I was planning on applying the finishing touches to this morning, but then I only got about one hour of sleep and I don’t want to screw it up. The downside of being in management and specifically being on salary is that you’re always on call. While my place of business is generally only open 15 or 16 hours a day, our freezers are always running, or at least their supposed to be.
When you work in biologics and you’re dealing with proteins that need to be frozen at -30 C and stored at -20 C, your freezers are everything. Unfortunately, large walk in freezers are not typically designed to run that cold…
Anyway, I was woken up with a freezer alarm call at about 1:00 am, so I called in the repair tech, he finally got the freezer running again by about 3:30 am, and it recovered temperature sufficiently for me to go home around 4:45 am. I then needed to be back for a two hour staff meeting at 6:30 am. I’m going in again in a little bit for another caffeine fueled meeting and providing some management coverage. Hopefully by 3:00 pm I’ll be back home and passed out on my couch.
The good news is that the freezer never got warmer than it’s critical temperature so no product was effected, so it was well worth it, even though it cost me a night’s sleep.
