Allergies

I underwent allergy testing today and had a very in depth consultation with an allergist. From my experience I thought I had mild hay fever, allergies to bananas, watermelon, apples, cherries, and various nuts. As a safety precaution I’ve avoided fruit and nuts for the last six months or more. The results of the tests were quite interesting. They did the scratch test with 72 samples and I reacted to 43 of them. The doctor told me that I win the record for the most reactions this week.

I’m allergic to all trees except Juniper, especially Birch, most weeds, mites, cherries, and all nuts tested for except cashews. I found this interesting since I’ve had moderate reactions to some fruits that I tested negative too, but this is probably due to Oral Allergy Syndrome, so my reactions to bananas and melons are actually a cross-reaction due to just enough similar proteins to ragweed and sagebrush (which I am allergic to) that it prompts a reaction. My most severe reaction was to birch which is known to cause cross-reactions to such things as apples and pears, which also give me issues.

Here’s where it gets exciting. With the exception of hazelnut, my nut allergies are pretty mild and the doctor will help me find some strategies to help allow me to eat them (hello Chinese or Thai food!). As far as my oral allergy syndrome, with the immunotherapy I’ll be starting in two weeks (and continuing for 3-5 years) my pollen allergies should be effectively eliminated which should allow me to again enjoy a succulent slice of Hermiston watermelon next August. With any luck I may even be able to have a banana split with peanuts on top!

Unfortunately, due to how many allergens they have to include in the allergy shots, I’ll actually have to get a shot in each arm weekly for the next 6 – 10 months and then monthly for several years.
