Let’s try something different for this week’s Tuesday Science. Rather than a science video or something about one topic, I’ll share a handful of interesting science articles I came across last week.
- In an over reaction of epic proportions, Germany has deecided to end nuclear power generation by 2022.
- According to the USDA 30% of commercial honey bee’s were lost last winter. Similar losses have been observed in the past four years. In some cases it’s entire colonies with no sign of bee corpses.
- A few blind people have mastered echolocation. Like in bats, dolphins, and shrews, the visual cortex is the part of the brain that processes the echoes. For those who have sight, there is no such echo processing. This is an exciting example of the adaptability of the human brain. Hopefully this study will be able to be used to create methods to train more blind people to use echolocation.
- The Clergy Letter Project currently has 12,725 Christian ministers and 476 Jewish Rabbis who have signed open letters that state that there is no conflict between faith and evolution as well as endorsing a ban on teaching creationism in schools. They have now launched the “Imam Letter” for Islamic clergy.
I’ve subscribed to a few more science feeds, so it’ll be interesting to see what I come across this week.
